8 Career Resolutions for 2020

The new year is upon us, and with the new year, comes New Year’s resolutions. Here are 8 career goals you can actually achieve in 2020!

With the New Year just around the corner, people are beginning to think about the changes they’d like to make in 2020. New Year’s Resolutions are often made about things in our personal life, such as weight loss or quitting smoking. But what about your job? Are you interested in bettering your career in the New Year? If so, here are some ideas for resolutions to get you started!

Get organized.

This goes for all areas of your professional life, not just your filing cabinet. Be on time for work and meetings. Keep your desk free of clutter and distractions. Practice good time management. All of these things will help you work more efficiently, producing better results.

Network.

We get it. For some people, the sheer thought of having to mingle with people you don’t know can send chills right up the spine. Be smart about it. Go to industry-related events where you know you’ll have something in common to talk about. Make a mental list before you go of people you’d like to meet along with questions you can ask.

Brush up your skill set.

You have skills- just make sure you keep them up to date! Keep certifications current and take extra training if needed. Are you a social media whiz? Subscribe to marketing emails where you can stay in the loop with platform updates. Bilingual? Practice by reading, listening and conversing regularly in your languages.

Reduce stress.

Easier said than done, right? While it’s not entirely possible to completely eliminate stress, it’s helpful to recognize what triggers it so you can better cope. For instance, if giving presentations stresses you out, practice delivering them in front of a mirror or a trusted friend to help you feel more confident.

Practice self-care.

Needless to say, this goes hand in hand with tackling stress! Although it’s not always entirely in your control, having your personal life in check can help your work performance. Getting enough sleep, eating right, exercising are all great ways to keep you well physically. Remember to also take care of your mental health- try meditation, journalling or a good old fashioned bubble bath to give yourself some much needed alone time.

Find a mentor.

Is there an expert in your industry whom you admire? Reach out to them on LinkedIn or email to see if they would be interested in sharing their wisdom with you. Remember to stay professional and avoid inundating them with countless questions- don’t contact them more than once or twice a month.

Ask for constructive criticism.

…and be prepared to accept it. Asking for feedback from your boss or co-worker not only shows that you are eager to improve the quality of your work but also can handle critiques.

Be the change.

It’s easy to complain about what’s wrong with your current employer, but It’s much harder to come up with a solution to a problem you’ve observed. This year, pick something that’s not working where you work, and come up with a way to fix it.
